12 Commandments for 1st year teachers

In addition to my day job teaching Kindergarten through 5th grade students, I have had the joy of being an adjunct instructor at a local university for the past 3 years or so. My students' goals are to be elementary classroom teachers. This class, Teaching Health and Physical Education in Elementary Schools, gives students the skills and insight to develop integrated lessons. Students learn of the importance of physical activity throughout the school day and how brain boosters, recess, and quality physical education are essential for student achievement.

We recently had our last class together. Although we were only together for a semester.....in a class that only met weekly, I have grown to admire these future educators for their passion and determination in this field. At the conclusion of our last class meeting, I gave them advice...my 12 commandments. Twelve ways they can become better teachers. Twelve ways they can take care of themselves and their students.

In no particular order:

1. Surround yourself with positive people.

2. Don't be afraid to say No.

3. Be proactive-- Plan, plan, and plan some more.

4. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

5. Befriend the counselor, CNP staff, custodial staff, maintenance technicians, secretary and school nurse.

6. Keep healthy snacks and water in your room-- avoid getting hangry.

7. Ask yourself when speaking to your students "Would I want someone to speak to my own child this way?"

8. Build relationships.

9. Make more time doing the things you enjoy.

10. Speak to everyone you pass in the hallway.

11. Connect with others on Twitter.

12. Be true to you....certainly use ideas from others but you have to be authentic in all you do.

Veteran teachers, what would you add? What would be your advice to a first year educator?
